What is Emergency Preparedness?
Please view our video on Being Prepared. Can be viewed using windows media player or real player.
MDOD envisions a Maryland where people with disabilities will be prepared for any natural or man-made disaster or emergency, and be able to take care of their own basic needs for a minimum of 72 hours without formal emergency management assistance. Emergency personnel, provider agencies and employers will be as well prepared to deal with all major issues related to individuals with disabilities during any natural or man-made disaster or emergency, as they are to deal with issues faced by individuals without disabilities.This section of the MDOD website offers a wide range of information on Emergency Preparedness.
Goal for Emergency Preparedness
The goal for Emergency Preparedness is to develop and implement a statewide plan to prepare people with disabilities for any natural or man-made emergency or general disasters or emergency, and prepare emergency personnel, provider agencies and employers to provide equally excellent emergency services to Maryland residents with and without disabilities.
Emergency Preparedness Initiative for Individuals with Disabilities in Maryland
Currently, the Emergency Preparedness Initiative for Individuals with Disabilities in Maryland is focused on the following:
- Specific trainings, exercises and drills for residential community agencies who provide services to persons with developmental disabilities;
- Development of a model template for evacuation and sheltering in place for employers;
- Review of accessibility of Emergency Notification systems currently used in the state.
